Costa Rica Program FAQs

Common questions about visas, eligibility, and life in the Land of Pura Vida.

How much can I expect to earn?
+
Teachers in Costa Rica typically earn between $700 and $1,500 USD per month depending on the number of hours worked (usually 20-30 hours). This is a sustainable income for a comfortable local lifestyle.
Do I need a university degree?
+
It depends on your passport. Citizens of the USA and Canada do not need a degree to teach legally. For all other eligible nationalities (UK, SA, AU, NZ, IR), a Bachelor's degree is required.
Is accommodation included?
+
Yes, during training. Housing is included for the full 4 weeks of your TEFL course in San Ramon. After you secure a job, our team helps you find your own long-term apartment near your school.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
+
No. You will be teaching English, so Spanish is not required in the classroom. However, learning some Spanish helps with daily life. We include Spanish language classes as part of your orientation package!.
How much money should I bring?
+
We recommend arriving with approximately $1,500 - $2,000 USD. Since housing is covered during training, this money is for your food, weekend excursions, and your deposit for an apartment once you start working.
What are the age requirements?
+
Applicants must be between **21 and 55 years old**. This program is open to mature learners and career changers as well as recent graduates.
Which nationalities are eligible?
+
Native Speakers Only. Due to local hiring preferences, we can only accept passport holders from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
What kind of visa will I get?
+
Most teachers enter on a tourist visa. Our legal team and your employer then provide full visa support to transition you to a legal status that allows for teaching once you are hired.
Where will my job placement be?
+
Most jobs are in the Central Valley (San Jose, Heredia) where the demand is highest. However, we also place adventurous teachers in coastal towns like Samara or Puerto Viejo, though competition there is higher.
Can I bring my pet?
+
Bringing pets is strongly discouraged. You will be staying in shared housing during training, which cannot accommodate pets. Finding pet-friendly rentals later can also be challenging.
How long is the contract?
+
Contracts are flexible! You can choose between **6-month or 12-month** contracts, making this a great option for those who can't commit to a full year.
Is medical insurance included?
+
No. You must arrive with proof of international medical insurance that covers you for at least the initial training period and job hunt.
