Getting Started

What is TEFL, TESOL, and TESL?

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) refers to teaching English in countries where English is not the native language.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is often used interchangeably with TEFL, but can also describe teaching non-native speakers living in English-speaking countries.

TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) typically refers to teaching English in countries where it is widely used as a second language (such as India, Nigeria, or Singapore).

In practice, TEFL is the most commonly used term internationally and is the standard qualification required by employers.

I don't have a degree; is teaching English abroad an option?

Yes. While some countries (like Korea/Japan) require a degree for a visa, many others do not. A TEFL certification enhances your prospects significantly in these regions.

Popular options for non-degree holders:

I’m a non-native English speaker. Can I get a TEFL job?

Yes. The majority of English teachers worldwide are non-native speakers.

Employers focus on English proficiency, teaching skills, and recognized TEFL certification. Factors that improve employability include:

  • Strong spoken and written English
  • A Bachelor’s degree (where required)
  • Teaching experience or in-country training
  • Flexibility with destination

Many non-native speakers successfully secure positions through TEFL internships or supported placements.

Is myTEFL accredited?

Yes. myTEFL is a Canadian education company accredited and moderated by independent international bodies, including ITEFLAC and ICOES.

Our certification is accepted worldwide and is used for government and public-sector programs such as EPIK (Korea), JET (Japan), and national teaching programs in Europe and Latin America.

Certificates can be notarized and authenticated for legal work visas where required.

Can I use a myTEFL certificate to apply for a work visa?

Yes. In countries where a TEFL certificate is required for a work visa, myTEFL certification is accepted.

Most countries require a minimum of 100–120 hours of accredited TEFL training, which is why our 120-hour and 140-hour courses are recommended for teaching abroad.

Do I need to speak another language to teach English?

No. TEFL classes are conducted entirely in English.

Teachers are trained to use clear language, context, and teaching techniques rather than relying on students’ native languages.

Courses & Exams

Which TEFL Course do you recommend?

We recommend the 120-hour Professional course for teaching abroad, as it meets international visa requirements. For online teaching, the 140-hour Master course is best as it adds a specific module for virtual classrooms.

Are online TEFL courses as useful as onsite courses?

Internships

What is a TEFL internship?

A TEFL internship is a structured program that combines training, orientation, and a secured teaching placement.

  • Fixed start dates and defined program length
  • In-country orientation and on-the-ground support
  • Guaranteed placement upon successful completion

Internships are ideal for new teachers, non-degree holders, and those seeking additional support when starting out.

What is the difference between a TEFL internship and job placement?

The key difference is structure and support.

  • Internships include orientation, training, and a secured placement tied to a specific start date.
  • Job placement is a flexible service that helps qualified teachers secure contracts year-round.

Internships remove uncertainty, while job placement offers greater flexibility.

Which TEFL internship destinations are available?

We offer supported TEFL internships in select destinations across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

Each destination has different requirements, benefits, and program structures. Availability varies by intake date.

Full details, eligibility, and start dates are listed on each internship page.

Can I choose my internship location?

You choose the country where you would like to complete your internship.

Within that country, you may provide preferences (such as city vs. smaller town), but final placement depends on school availability.

Do I need a degree to join a TEFL internship?

Not always. Many TEFL internships are designed specifically for candidates without a university degree.

Requirements vary by destination, but internships are one of the most common pathways for non-degree holders to start teaching legally and gain experience.

Do I need to retake a TEFL course to join an internship?

It depends on the internship.

  • Some programs require participation in an onsite TEFL course.
  • Other programs use a hybrid model and may accept an existing accredited TEFL certificate.

If you already hold a TEFL certificate, it can be reviewed to determine eligibility.

Is accommodation included in TEFL internships?

Accommodation inclusion depends on the destination and program.

  • Some internships include housing during orientation or for the full program.
  • Others provide support in securing safe, affordable accommodation nearby.

Accommodation details are clearly listed on each internship page.

Who pays for airfare for TEFL internships?

Participants are responsible for their own airfare for TEFL internships.

Any reimbursements or travel support, where applicable, are clearly stated on the program page.

Jobs & Placement

We offer lifetime job placement assistance to eligible graduates.

  • Placement coordinators help prepare and submit your application
  • Qualified candidates are often fast-tracked to the interview stage

All employers are reviewed to ensure legal contracts, professional standards, and fair compensation.

Can you guarantee me a teaching job?

No provider can guarantee a job, as hiring decisions depend on interviews, timing, and candidate availability.

That said, graduates who meet the requirements and complete the course successfully have a placement success rate of over 90%.

Can I apply for a job before I pass the course?

Yes. Many employers will interview you if you are currently enrolled. We can provide a letter of enrollment if needed to help you secure a contract before you even finish your studies.

Start your course today & get enrolled.
Why doesn’t myTEFL offer job placements in every country?

We focus on destinations that offer legal, stable, and sustainable employment.

In many countries, legal work permits are difficult or impossible to obtain, which leads to informal teaching arrangements. As an accredited provider, we cannot support illegal employment.

For destinations without direct placement options, TEFL internships provide a supported alternative.

Who pays for airfare for TEFL job placements?

Teachers are generally responsible for their own airfare.

Some destinations offer partial or full reimbursement after contract completion. Any travel benefits are listed clearly on the destination page.

Is accommodation included in TEFL job placements?

This depends on the destination.

  • Some countries provide free housing or a housing allowance
  • Others assist teachers in securing safe, affordable accommodation

Employers typically arrange temporary housing on arrival.

Will you help with my CV, cover letter, or interview preparation?

Yes. Graduates have access to TEFL-specific CV and cover letter templates, application guidance, and interview preparation tips.

Documents can also be reviewed by our team for feedback and improvement.
